Gargoyle

The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson

An extraordinary debut novel of love that survives the fires of hell and transcends the boundaries of time.

On a burn ward, a man lies between living and dying, so disfigured that no one from his past life would even recognize him. His only comfort comes from imagining various inventive ways to end his misery. Then a woman named Marianne Engel walks into his hospital room, a wild-haired, schizophrenic sculptress on the lam from the psych ward upstairs, who insists that she knows him – that she has known him, in fact, for seven hundred years. She remembers vividly when they met, in another hospital ward at a convent in medieval Germany, when she was a nun and he was a wounded mercenary left to die. If he has forgotten this, he is not to worry: she will prove it to him.

And so Marianne Engel begins to tell him their story, carving away his disbelief and slowly drawing him into the orbit and power of a word he’d never uttered: love.

Spellman Files
By:  Lisa Lutz

The Spellman files is the first book in the Izzy Spellman Mysteries.  This book is a laugh out loud, great read.  Isabel Spellman is a twenty eight year-old who works in the family business: Spellman Investigations.  Izzy is part Bridget Jones, part Columbo as she works as a private investigator.  With her crazy past of romantic mistakes, excessive drinking and creative vandalism, she excels at her job.  The characters in this novel include her bosses, mom and dad, her perfect lawyer brother David, her 14 year-old sister Rae, who likes to do recreational surveillance, and her troubled Uncle Ray, who has many “lost weekends”.

Izzy is a master at spying on everyone, which includes running background checks on her boyfriends.  But when her family hires her own sister to spy on Izzy, she is ready to call it quits.  Her parents assign her a final case that will change everything.

This novel is a fun read and I would recommend it to everyone.

In a letter to her daughter back East, Martha Jane is not shy about her own importance: “Martha Jane — better known as Calamity — is just one of the handful of aging legends who travel to London as part of Buffalo Bill Cody’’s Wild West Show in Buffalo Girls. As he describes the insatiable curiosity of Calamity’’s Indian friend No Ears, Annie Oakley’’s shooting match with Lord Windhouveren, and other highlights of the tour, McMurtry turns the story of a band of hardy, irrepressible survivors into an unforgettable portrait of love, fellowship, dreams, and heartbreak.
