Have you ever wondered why they call Victoria Day “May 2-4, when it hardly ever falls on May 24th?

It was declared a holiday in 1845 by the Legislature of the Province of Canada.   The original holiday was May 24 which was Queen Victoria’s (1837-1901) birthday.  If her birthday fell on a Sunday, then the holiday was held on Monday the 25th.  In 1957, Victoria Day was permanently appointed as the Queen’s birthday in Canada.  An amendment to the Statutes of Canada in 1952 established the celebration of Victoria Day on the Monday preceding May 25.

So now you know why May 2-4 is so early this year!
