Valentines Day

February 4, 2008 at 10:54 am (Community)

CherubRomance is definitely in the air as we approach Valentines Day. Amongst the flowers, candy and cards there is a rich tapestry of history and facts that mark the romance tied to this very day. So here is a little Valentines Day history for everyone.

St. Valentines Day, as we know it today is tied to one of three possible patron saints with named either Valentine or Valentinus. All three saints where martyred for there various treacherous acts against Rome.

The most common Valentine legend however is that Valentine was a priest during the 3rd century of Rome. Emperor Claudius II decided to draft all young men for military service and outlawed marriage for younger men. The belief was that young single men made better soldiers.

Valentine felt the decree was unjust and defied the emperor, by performing marriage rights in secret. When Claudius discovered Valentines treachery he was harshly punished, he was imprisoned and killed.

While in prison it is believed that he fell in love with a young woman, who began visiting during his confinement. It is then alleged that he wrote her a letter prior to his death signed, “From Your Valentine.” This expression has become a timeless indicator of love and affection on this day.

The actual events that took place are convoluted and murky but the legend of the St. Valentine and his love has become a timeless expression. It is representative of the close ties we have with our loved ones and the affection we are them. Happy Valentines Day from all the staff at the Belleville Public Library.
