Kiran Desai has won the 38th Man Booker Prize for Fiction for her novel, The Inheritance of Loss. You can find the full press release here.

Belleville Municipal Elections 2006

Looking for more information on the 2006 municipal elections? Trying to figure out where the candidates stand on issues that are important to you?

We’ve put together a binder with information on advance polls and polling stations, all-candidates meetings and the candidates themselves. Just ask for the election binder at the Information Services desk on the 2nd floor of the Library.

Celebrate Ontario Public Library Week

October 16th to 22nd is Ontario Library Week, and today is Ontario Library Worker’s Day! Let the library staff know how much you appreciate them! October is also Canadian Library Month.

We have a display in the rotunda with information about upcoming programs and library services, and a contest to win a Friends of the Library bookbag!

Free Computer Classes!

The Belleville Public Library is offering free computer classes for beginners! These are group lessons with a maximum of 10 people, and pre-registration is required. Classes will be held in the 2nd floor computer lab and will be one hour long. The five main topics to be covered are:

 Introduction to Computers

Word Processing (using Microsoft Word)

Internet Search

Email

Online Library Catalogue

Telling Our Stories Contest

The Federation of Ontario Public Libraries is running a contest between October 16th and November 30th, 2006. Just click on the icon below to submit your story in 500 words or less on how the public library has made a difference to you or your family.

Judging of the stories will take place in December and January, with the winner being announced at the 2007 Super Conference of the Ontario Library Association. First, second and third place winners will brought to Toronto, all expenses paid!

Scotiabank Giller Prize Shortlist

Founded in 1994 by Jack Rabinovitch, the Scotiabank Giller Prize is Canada’s premier prize for fiction. Named in honour of Jack’s wife, Doris Giller, and selected by a jury, the shortlist is comprised of 5 titles, narrowed down  from over 100 books submitted for consideration.

  • Rawi Hage for his novel De Niro’s Game.
  • Vincent Lam for his short story collection, Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures.
  • Pascale Quiviger for her novel The Perfect Circle, translation by Sheila Fischman.
  • Gaétan Soucy for his novel The Immaculate Conception, translation by Lazer Lederhendler.
  • Carol Windley for her short story collection, Home Schooling.

 The winner will be announced on November 7th, and the awards gala will be televised on CTV.
